A client asked me this question recently and it’s a good one.

Most people use interior design and interior decoration interchangeably but there actually are some major distinctions.

And I’d hazard a guess that if you’re considering an interiors project, you probably need both.

I have to admit I found this explanation on the internet and I think it sums up the differences perfectly…

“Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behaviour to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.”

An interior designer is usually involved with a building project from the beginning, perhaps even working with the architect. Their job is to help create functional interior space by understanding how the inhabitants will use each room. They may consider light, sound and other design aspects but is also well versed in building codes and structural considerations. Because of this, generally speaking, designers have an official and recognised training.

An interior decorator isn’t involved with the design of the building or the layout of the interior space. He is focused entirely on the furniture, colours, textiles and textures of a room. Their job is to capture the personality and style of the resident and express it in their space. A decorator doesn’t need any official training to adopt the title.

So there it is, distinct and complementary skills and I’m trained and experienced in both. I love both and often find that different clients need a wonderful and creative mixture of the two.

What inspires me most is understanding people’s needs and rituals, what’s going right and what’s going wrong in the building your live in and working out – together – what the best solution is for you.
